Newcastle Airport backs Inspiring Women in Business Awards

Newcastle Airport is headline sponsor of the North East Chamber of Commerce Inspiring Women in Business Awards, marking the third year of partnership. As the region’s international gateway and one of its largest employers, the airport sees the event as a chance to celebrate achievements and drive change. Alice Andreasen, chief corporate affairs officer, says supporting women is embedded in the airport’s culture. Women hold roles across customer service, operations, and technical positions, and their contributions are vital to the business.

Visible role models and internal networks

Andreasen argues that role models are essential because they show what is possible. Seeing others succeed builds confidence in one’s own potential. The airport hosts regular events through its Women in Leadership network, bringing employees together to share experiences. Guest speakers from the business community also join to discuss career journeys. Attendance at these events has grown, proving the power of visibility. The airport recently hired its first female firefighters, a milestone that highlights a commitment to inclusive career pathways. These hires show that capability matters most, regardless of gender, and that everyone can see a future for themselves there.

Expanding opportunities beyond the fire service

Passenger services manager Charlotte Birkett illustrates the broader impact of these efforts. She joined through an ambassador program while studying at Newcastle College and has risen through the ranks to lead her team. Her recognition as ‘One to Watch’ in the 2023 awards [1] shows the value of such programs. The airport partnered with the college to offer 92 students hands-on experience last year. More than 30 of those students now hold full-time roles, demonstrating that aviation offers rewarding careers for everyone. This approach helps challenge outdated perceptions of the industry.

The airport’s success depends on its people. Its 2040 masterplan projects significant growth, contributing up to £1.9 billion in GVA to the North East economy and employing around 5,000 staff. Building a workforce that reflects the communities it serves strengthens the business and innovation. Creating clear pathways for progression supports a culture where people feel supported to develop and succeed. This focus on diverse talent aligns with the broader goal of ensuring women have the opportunities, support, and confidence to reach their full potential.

Events like the Inspiring Women in Business Awards play a key role in this ecosystem. By shining a light on remarkable achievements, they encourage more women to pursue ambitious careers. Andreasen notes that a collective effort is required, involving inclusive workplace cultures, career development support, and accessible leadership pathways. While the airport leads by example, businesses across the region must collaborate to unlock more talent and strengthen the local economy.
