After a decade of building a leading UK electrolyte brand, Phizz is making its official debut in Australian Woolworths supermarkets. The brand, founded by Australians, offers flavored electrolyte and vitamin tablets, with its flagship product competing against local names like Hydralyte and Voost. Phizz’s Australian launch, marked on Monday, introduces a three-in-one tablet designed to enhance hydration, targeting a market already familiar with such products.
Phizz’s founding team, including CEO Dan Cray, hopes their Australian roots and UK experience will help them secure a place in the market during the upcoming summer months. Cray, reflecting on the journey, noted, “In 10 years of building a business in the UK, there have been a lot of ‘pinch yourself’ moments,” highlighting the personal significance of this homecoming.
From long-haul flights to daily hydration
Cray, along with Rory Simmance-Fremantle, Jon Knight, and British neuroscientist Dr. Paul Anastasiades, founded Phizz in London. The product was originally designed to combat dehydration caused by long flights between Australia and the UK. It quickly evolved into an all-purpose wellness brand, targeting dehydrated Brits and promoting the benefits of proper hydration throughout the day. Cray emphasized, “The benefits of being properly hydrated just made sense because you feel more awake, exercise feels easier, you’re sharper.” Phizz has sold over 160 million tablets to date, a sign of its growing popularity.
Targeting health-conscious Aussies
Cray believes the lessons learned in the UK will help Phizz reach health-conscious Australians. He notes that while Aussies understand hydration well due to hot summers and a sports-loving culture, research shows that 40% forget to drink water when busy, even though 85% drink more when temperatures exceed 30 degrees. Drawing a parallel to the term “hangry,” Cray suggests there’s an equivalent for hydration, positioning Phizz as a proactive solution. “That’s a really good place for us to come in,” he said, emphasizing the brand’s focus on daily hydration habits rather than just recovery.
Phizz aims to address this gap by encouraging people to think about their hydration habits daily. The brand’s Australian launch includes 20-tablet packs priced at $16 each. Cray expressed excitement about the launch, stating, “We’re just really excited to get onto shelves, and make sure we deliver through on what we say.”
