Funding from the UK Government will allow the North East Community Forest (NECF) to extend its woodland creation and green‑space projects through 2030.
New funding backs tree planting and community work
NECF received Trees for Climate Phase 2 funding, earmarked for long‑term support of its forest team and upcoming projects across the region. The programme announced a £4.2 million grant for new woodland and community engagement, alongside a £50,000 award for Ouseburn Farm via the Royal Society of Arts’ Playful Green Planet scheme.
The most recent annual report shows 125,375 trees planted in the 2025/26 season, adding more than 158 hectares of woodland, hedgerows and open‑space habitat. Volunteers built over 6,200 metres of hedgerow and laid nine kilometres of footpaths, creating 27 hectares of accessible open space.
Volunteer involvement drives results
Community participation remains a cornerstone of the effort. Over the year, 11,454 people took part in activities, and 4,274 volunteers contributed more than 4,700 hours. They planted 31,451 trees across 117 events, reinforcing reliance on local hands.

Since its launch in 2001, the forest has planted more than 642,000 trees and established nearly 700 hectares of new woodland. The new habitats are projected to remove around 49,094 tonnes of carbon dioxide over the next 30 years.
“As one of England’s newer Community Forests, we have already shown what can be achieved through strong partnerships,” said Lloyd Jones, forest manager at NECF. “With long‑term funding in place and a focus on attracting new investment, we are well positioned to expand our impact and deliver lasting benefits for communities and the environment across the North East.”
Councillor Peter Lovatt, cabinet member for neighbourhoods and local services at Newcastle City Council, highlighted the scale of progress. “This report highlights the remarkable progress being made by the North East Community Forest and the collective effort of local authorities, communities, volunteers and partners across the region. With more than 125,000 trees planted this year alone and funding secured until 2030, there is a unique opportunity to leave a lasting legacy for future generations while supporting biodiversity and enhancing the places where people live, work and visit.”
